The spectacle of the conferences are fun and fuel the debates. The shade thrown at the competition. If I wanted to just see games I would wait for trailers uploaded to youtube and there would be no need for a conference.
Agreed with all you said except Spiderman being underwhelming. I think what hurts their E3 is their increasing focus on PS Experience conference. But boy was the pacing of their conference a mess!

None of your two factors fuel my "angst". MGSV sucks because it destroyed the best chance to tie the whole story of the series with a neat bow. Chapter 2 was incomplete, filled with repeated missions from chapter 1, and Chapter 3 and Liquid's Boss fight after taking the metal gear was cut. Imagine that, the ending of the game was cut, WTF.

@SolidSioux, you're mostly correct but as we learn in MGSV, Zero was made sick by Skull Face and the rest of the time the AI was working alone.
